"Alert! North Korea Tests Ballistic Missile, Raising Tensions Worldwide"

6/MAY/23 | SYED JUNIAD

North Korea fired a suspected ballistic missile into the sea on Saturday, South Korea and Japan said, in the latest in a series of weapons tests by the nuclear-armed state.

The missile was fired from the Sunan area of Pyongyang, the North's capital, and flew eastward for about 75 kilometers (47 miles) before landing in the sea, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

Japan's Defense Ministry said the missile appeared to have traveled about 600 kilometers (370 miles) and reached an altitude of about 20 kilometers (12 miles).

The launch comes just days after North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea.

The North has been ramping up its weapons tests in recent months, in defiance of international sanctions.

The United States and its allies have condemned the launches and urged North Korea to return to denuclearization talks.

North Korea has said it will continue to develop its nuclear and missile programs until it achieves its goal of becoming a "strong nuclear-armed state."

The latest launch is a reminder of the threat posed by North Korea and the need for the international community to work together to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

  • The missile launch was the 17th this year by North Korea.
  • The United States and South Korea have vowed to respond "firmly" to any further provocations from North Korea.
  • The United Nations Security Council has imposed multiple rounds of sanctions on North Korea in response to its nuclear and missile programs.
  • North Korea has said it is willing to resume talks with the United States, but only if the United States lifts sanctions.

The latest missile launch is a reminder of the threat posed by North Korea and the need for the international community to work together to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.
